Rapid advances in technology are no longer jaw-dropping, but merely the next step to an ever-changing, digitally-based world. You experience it wherever you go: the touch of a finger to a flat-screen to get you anything from groceries to the latest smart phone. And you literally just move that same finger to get your goods delivered.

We are spending more of our time on smart devices than ever before, either learning, working or watching. Because of this, we have to consider the downside of the digital age: the overexposure of our eyes to blue-violet light from LED screens. There is some evidence indicating that long-term exposure to blue-violet light  below 460 nm, with a maximum at 440 nm, may cause photochemical damage of the retina and further increase the risk of macular degeneration over a period of time (better known as the “blue light hazard”). This problem, however, has a technological solution.

Optometric technology has advanced along with the digital age and a coating for eye glasses that partially reflects blue-violet light has been developed. The BlueProtect coating limits the amount of blue-violet light that enters the eye and aims to prevent damage to the retina. An additional “anti-reflective” coating may also be applied to the back of the lens to add further protection against harmful UV rays and reduce the indirect light reflected into the eye.
